What you will learn
“Move fast and break things. Unless you are breaking stuff, you are not moving fast enough” – Mark Zuckerberg
Where’s your true north when it comes to responsibility, risk and failure?
If your boss, org chart or plain ol’ luck get more than their fair share of blame, you may not be thinking like an entrepreneur – and it might be holding you back.
In this series, Cameron Uganec, Senior Director of Growth Marketing & Education at Hootsuite, Lori Joyce, Founder of Betterwith Foods, and Eric Hopkins, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategic Ventures Officer with BCAA, will share practical tips and lessons on what entrepreneurs can teach you about staying competitive in the corporate world. They’ll talk about turning challenge into opportunity, what it really takes to dream, devise and create, and how to fail fast – and get right back at it.
Whether or not you want to start a business, there’s something to be learned from the entrepreneurial spirit, like how to:
- Focus on value creation
- Disrupt old models – employ an agile and iterative approach
- Create a team culture of empowerment
- Dig in with grit and hard work to sell the vision
Learning to develop an entrepreneurial mindset will be one of the best self-growth initiatives you take on this year – don’t miss out.

Founder, Betterwith Foods
Lori Joyce is a mother of two and a business owner. Lori co-founded Cupcakes, a Vancouver-based bakery franchise, with her best friend Heather White in 2002.
Lori and Heather’s Cupcakes venture was documented in the hit reality television show, “The Cupcake Girls”. Today, Cupcakes has ten bakery locations across Canada.
In expanding the Cupcakes business, Lori recognized the need to pair cupcakes with other products, and the evolution of Betterwith Ice Cream began. “Everyone knows that cupcakes are better with ice cream,” she says.
Yet, Lori wanted to create an ice cream that was better than everything else: a premium ice cream using only the highest-quality sourced ingredients, farm-fresh traceable milk, and no preservatives. More importantly, Lori wanted to connect today’s consumer to the source of their food.
“Indulgences should never be compromised. If you’re going to have ice cream, it should be the richest, creamiest, and most irrationally delicious ice cream you’ve ever enjoyed. And it should taste as good as it makes you feel,” she says. “This is why I created Betterwith Ice Cream.”
Senior Vice President & Chief Strategic Ventures Officer
Eric Hopkins is Senior Vice President & Chief Strategic Ventures Officer with the British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA). Over the last two years, he successfully conceptualized, strategized, launched operations of BCAA’s Evo Car Share.
In launching the car-sharing service, Hopkins led BCAA through the new business venture process, and in doing so, got ahead of the trend for younger people to delay getting drivers’ licenses and to own cars. This disruption to a long-standing rite of passage was viewed as an opportunity – a niche market to serve – rather than the inevitable decline of BCAA’s traditional business.
Following the successful launch of Evo, Eric’s focus is now turned to building and launching the next great platform through which BCAA can deliver value to British Columbians today and in the future!
